Hannah Johnson
Hey! I am Active Duty Navy and currently stationed in sunny San Diego. My husband is a Navy veteran and together we have three little boys who love to be outside just as much as I do. Nothing makes me happier than seeing them out on the trail exploring. I would consider myself an expert baby-wearer at this point and seasoned in the art of hiking with small children. My love of the outdoors goes all the way back to my early childhood in northern Florida where my sisters and I would spend our days in the woods pretending to host our own survivalist and animal enthusiast shows. But, I really rediscovered my wanderlust while stationed in Washington during the pandemic. Something about being out in nature, away from civilization, brings me a sense of comfort and elation at the same time. My soul is at home when I’m in the wilderness.

Favorite Adventure: Mt. Ellinor in the Olympic Mountains was my first solo ‘big’ hike and my first solo sunrise hike. I have a deep connection with that summit and it will forever be one of my favorite places in the world. Plus, it’s absolutely breathtaking. I mean, who doesn’t love being nestled among jagged peaks with incredible views below?
Favorite Trail Snack: Uncrustables, or ‘jammiches’ as we referred to them on the ship, and trail mix with lots of chocolate.
I always pack a hat, a multitool with a good knife, mini first aid kit, flash light, trash bag, and a baby carrier since I usually have at least one little one in tow. Not necessarily considered ‘packing,’ but I also always make sure to have an offline map available of where I will be; even if it is just a screen shot for reference.
Carola Peralta
Hola! My name is Carola. I’m a biologist, mom of 3 boys and for the last 16 years, a Coast Guard wife.
We are currently stationed in San Diego CA, but both my husband and I are originally from Puerto Rico. Being from an Island, for as long as I can remember, the outdoors have been part of my life. Camping, hiking & scuba diving are some of my favorite outdoor activities. Recently I discovered a passion for canyoneering (or canyoning) that us beyond words! The outdoors have a magical power to restore your energy, yet the feeling you get descending down a canyon with the rushing water of a waterfall hitting you is incomparable.
This is our first time stationed on the west coast which has given us the opportunity to be in an “exploring new things state of mind”, and it has delivered. Can’t wait to tackle this California bucket list of adventures with you!

Favorite Adventure: Traveling is my second passion. Visiting Petra has been one of the best and most memorable adventures I have ever had.
Favorite Trail Snack: Granola Bars and fresh fruit.
The permanent residents of my backpack are: a Swiss Army knife, cash & pen (because there’s never service when you have to fill out permits and pay), sunscreen, first aid, gloves, rope and honey sticks.
Allison Offerle
Hello! I am Allison Wheeler, I am Active Duty Navy stationed in San Diego. I am originally from Indiana,
but my husband and I have settled in Central California with our three dogs: Sierra (Labrador), Renea
(Chihuahua) and Mini (Chihuahua), in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Ever since I was
little, my family & I have always enjoy trips into the outdoors and exploring all over and even more so
since moving to the Sierra Nevada. My favorite outdoor activities include fishing, hiking, camping, and
more; but trust my dogs are always at my heels. I spend my week days in San Diego; but go home on
most weekends. I am grateful for the opportunity to meet new friends and to share experiences in the
beautiful state of California and show that it is more than just beaches and city-scape.

Favorite Adventure: I cannot choose just one, but I love going out and camping in the back country of
the Sierra Nevada Mountains, fishing and hiking with my husband and dogs (they go everywhere with
me). But I cannot forget the adventures I have on my deployments, being able to meet people in
different chapters, and enjoy hikes all over the world.
Favorite Trail Snack: Gallo Italian Dry Salame, Energy Chews, Uncrustables.
I always pack my Camelback, phone, and Renea.
This Could be you...

Author: Christine Reed
Washington, nationwide
Christine discovered long distance backpacking while surfing the internet at work. She decided that day to attempt to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. One adventure led to another and a few years later she set out on the Wonderland Trail in Mt Rainier National Park. Her Rugged Outdoors Woman persona started as a joke, a nod to the outdoor adventurer that she wished to be. But in the years since, she has come into her own as a backpacker, rock climber, and trail runner. Her book, “Alone in Wonderland,” is a testament to the decision to name who you want to be and make it so.

Jamie McGillen lives in the shadow of Mount Rainier, and no matter how many times she moves away, it draws her home. Everything about large evergreen trees delights her, except how poky they are, and the sap. Her first novel In Sight of the Mountain was released in 2019, with sequels released in 2020 and 2021. Her poems and essays have been published in Rust + Moth, Marathon Literary Review, The Raven Chronicles Journal, Avalon Literary Review, and Arcturus Literary Magazine.
